All metal beauty: The first coat of primer is on

With the metal work completed our Dino is now wearing its first coat of epoxy primer. As we mentioned earlier the plan was to spend more time in metal work to achieve the best possible surface on which to go to the blocking and painting phase. While this sounded good in theory, it did not prepare us for the reality of what we saw.

The images you see below are of a bare metal body wearing nothing more than a coat of primer. There is not an ounce of filler ANYWHERE on the car. The guys at RM have done a stellar job and we were just taken aback by how far we had come.

The next stages are to final fit the panels to get the gaps perfect and then block sanding will begin. For now just take in the beauty of an almost naked Dino.

    1. Thank you. It is so much better looking in the flesh.

  2. Something magical about finally putting on finish after all of the hard work getting there. Fortunately you have found someone that restored the body to the exceptional standards you have restored the sub-assemblies. I bet you guys are getting excited to start putting parts back on. Great job.

    1. Yes we are very excited to get to the assembly stage but there is still a lot of story left to be told as the car gets painted and polished.

  3. Wow, great to see! How many hours were spend by RM on the metal work?

    1. I am not sure of the hour breakdown as Paul handles all of that. I do know that a lot of time was spent fixing the work done previous but you can be certain that the number is WELL into the hundreds of hours.

  4. Do you have any concerns about the gaps changing after you finish and then load the car with engine and other items that have weight which could flex the structure?
    Thank you,

    1. Hi Scott

We posed that question to RM and were told that it is a non issue. The structure of a Dino is made up by the tube chassis and not by the body panels which are more decorative than load bearing. Some uni-body cars require an engine to get the panels straight but the Dino does not suffer from this. Lucky for us as the engine is not done yet :)

  5. Hi Paul & Rod,
Can't wait to see it completed and on the road. As well are there any intentions in showing and having it judged at any major events?

  6. We too are looking forward to having it on the road. The intentions are to show the car once likely at the FCA National Meet next year. After that we are really only interested in driving it rather than have it formally judged. That won't keep us from taking it to the local events though.
